Building Your First Guitar
So do you want to build a guitar or what?
Here’s the deal… I wouldn’t try building an acoustic guitar to start off with. Why? Well, it’s just too hard.
Think about it: you have to glue every piece together. Even if you have a kit, you still have to shape the wood just perfectly, and the humidity has to be just right. Were you born with a sixth sense for this sort of thing? I wasn’t.
So it’s better to start off by building a solid body electric guitar that you know will probably end up playing and sounding real fine, than it is to end up with a clunker acoustic.
Here’s how you do it:
- Make a parts list. Look at a guitar that you already have. Write down every conceivable part you can think of.
- Find suppliers for your parts.
- Practice by taking apart and reassembling a couple of guitars.
- Build your new guitar.
There are great resources out there for learning guitar building. Once you’ve got your new guitar, use Team Method Guitar to learn how to play it.
